Answer
If your payment was issued as a direct deposit, your first step is to check with your bank and make sure they didn't receive a deposit.
You can request a payment trace from the IRS. This allows the IRS to contact the bank on your behalf to attempt recovery of your deposit. To request a payment trace, follow the instructions at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-round-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-payment-issued-but-lost-stolen-destroyed-or-not-received
According to the IRS, "If funds aren't available or the bank refuses to return the funds, the IRS cannot compel the bank to do so. The case may then become a civil matter between you and the financial institution and/or the owner of the account into which the funds were deposited."
Another option is to contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service, which is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers with problems that are causing financial difficulty. Instructions for using this service are available at https://www.irs.gov/advocate/the-taxpayer-advocate-service-is-your-voice-at-the-irs
Specific instructions for getting TAS assistance with a lost or stolen refund are available at https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/get-help/refunds/lost-or-stolen-refund/
You can check the status of any of your payments by going to (or creating) your IRS Online Account.
I hope this information is helpful. If this is not what you need, or if you require any further assistance, please let us know.
