How many firearms were found on United States airlines in 2001?
I am conducting a research challenge for a class and I have been unable to find information on the number of firearms found on U.S. airlines in 2001. Because the DHS and TSA did not exist yet, that information is proving to be elusive. I can only find as far back as 2005

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Statistics on the number of firearms detected in airline passenger screenings during 2001 can be found on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website at https://www.bts.gov/archive/publications/pocket_guide_to_transportation/2004/table_06

This table ("Table 6: Airline Passenger Screening Results") is excerpted from the BTS publication Pocket Guide to Transportation: 2004, available in PDF format at http://libraryarchives.metro.net/DPGTL/usdot/pocket-guide-to-transportation/2004-usdot-bts-pocket-guide-to-transportation.pdf (Table 6 is on page 10, or PDF screen 14.)

The main webpage for the archived 2004 Pocket Guide has links to individual tables in various formats, and is available at https://www.bts.dot.gov/archive/publications/pocket_guide_to_transportation/2004/index
